Eradicating Dowries

In one of KMG’s new operational areas, the amount of dowry given to the families of the bride used to be 25,000 Birr ($1250). After KMG’s intervention in 2012, the community came to a consensus to avoid the concept of dowry, because they understood that accepting dowry amounted to selling their daughter to the highest bidder.  In 2014, all agreed and incorporated into their bylaws that the price of the dowry be 300 Birr ($15), as a symbol of a contribution to the wedding expenses, not as a price of the bride.
