Bogaletch Gebre was laid to rest in the town of Durame in Kembatta zone on November 19th, 2019. Her funeral was attended by thousands of people from the communities she severed. Also attending were family members, relatives, friends, prominent community leaders, as well as Federal officials, and local government officials from the regions, zones and woredas where KMG is operating (SNNPRS and Oromia).
Attendees celebrated Boge’s enormous sacrifices and unrelenting commitment to end Female Genital Mutilation, while launching a series of integrated programs to uproot its social, economic, cultural, and economic underpinnings
Plans are underway to hold a memorial service for Boge in Addis Abeba on December 13th to enable senior Ethiopian government officials, foreign Embassy personnel, and other dignitaries to pay tribute to Boge’s legacy. This memorial is being organized by KMG Ethiopia in collaboration with the French Embassy in Addis which graciously volunteered to host it.
Additionally, a memorial service for Boge will be organized in Lost Angeles during 1st Quarter 2020 so all Ethiopian and American friends of Boge will have an opportunity to honor the life and legacy of Boge: her fierce determination, sacrifices, and monumental accomplishments in uplifting and empowering women and girls, weighed down by harmful cultural practices.
